Sustainable track damping system for urban transport

Trams are playing an increasingly important role in sustainable mobility, and cities are investing heavily in expanding their networks. However, integrating tracks into busy urban areas comes with challenges such as noise pollution and stray-current corrosion. To address these issues, KRAIBURG STRAIL has developed the STRAILastic systems.

Track damping system for enhanced safety and less noise

The modular STRAILastic systems offer tailored solutions for both sleeper and frame tracks. The STRAILastic SOK and STRAILastic SOK simplex systems are made from durable, hot-vulcanized rubber, able to withstand extreme temperatures from -40 °C to +90 °C and resistant to UV and ozone. They not only reduce noise emissions but also protect rails from stray currents.

A major advantage is their simple, adhesive-free installation. The systems can be installed quickly, cutting both construction time and costs. This was clearly demonstrated in Ulm, where 935 meters of the STRAILastic SOK simplex system were successfully laid in a challenging track section with ascending and descending gradients of up to eight percent. Thanks to the system, installation was possible even during high summer temperatures, which would otherwise risk track deformations.

Green tracks for a better city

In addition to systems for paved surfaces, KRAIBURG STRAIL also offers grass track variants. These green tracks not only add more greenery to urban areas but also positively impact the microclimate and water management. They capture rainwater, which is gradually released into the drainage system, helping to ease the load during heavy rainfall. In addition, the plants help cool the surroundings, as the stored water evaporates and they warm up less than concrete or asphalt.

In Ulm, over six kilometers of the grass track variant were installed. The project was equipped with specially designed access panels to simplify inspection and maintenance work. The contracted construction company was able to lay up to 200 meters of track per night shift.

All STRAILastic systems are highly sustainable, made from recycled rubber granules and 100 % recyclable.
